Take a look at http://books.guardian.co.uk/extracts/story/0,,1940602,00.html

I like the one about Russia.

<idiotic american>
Can't say I'd ever heard of gap years before. there were a couple about russia there, the second being much funnier to me. I think my favorite was the guy saying "i got to amputee a leg, was good, also got a couple free lunches, also good"
I guess I'm still in my gap 'year', maybe one day I'll end it
</idiotic american> <--- is this actually possible?

I just loved the thought of young kids freezing to death as they walked to school ... great mental picture.

Some of the others reminded me so much of my two.

Gap years are a common practice overe here where we get to get rid of the kids for a year, usually between the A-levels and university, and it only costs us ?3-5,000 (per child), plus living expenses, plus ..., plus ...

Wait wait wait.. the parents actually pay for this?
I took "a year off" that I never returned from, I wish my parents had paid for me to go away. maybe i would have returned!

Hmmm... my parents are both English by birth... I think I might have to go ask why I never got to take advantage of this tradition...:think:

LOL! Gap-years, eh? Never heard of them until now. A lot of strange (foreign) things going on across that pond... ;)

Very funny though. :yes
