Hello everybody,

This is not a vba problem but a lot of you met this problem!

We did discover that there sites on the internet who gives the posibillity to open your password protected document.

After sending a document protected with a password of 15 characters, included special characters and characters with an ascii value more then 255.

We didn't get the password but the content was showed.

Is there any posibillity to make a document that is not to opened (encrypted)

I am surprised. Word encryption is pretty good and it shouldn't be possible to break that easily. Are you sure you used encryption, and what version of Word are you using?

We are using msWord 2000.

We made a document with a password of 15 characters, included chr(789) & chr(456) & chr(963)

The website https://secure.decryptum.com/upload.html gave not the password but shows a part of the first page. Unbelieveble and it is frustrating me!!

Does someone knows a solution for real protecting documents?

Michelle.

It was my understanding that Word used (or could use) pretty strong encryption but you will need to be more up-to-date than Word 2000 to get it. There is some information from Microsoft here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290112)

While looking around I happenned to see this (http://www.securityfocus.com/brief/407), a news item from a couple of weeks ago suggesting that 40 bit keys (the default for all but the strongest encryption, even in Word 2003) are no longer secure at all.

I am not a security expert and am not competent to give advice. All I can really say is that the more recent your version of Office, the more secure the encryption is likely to be, but what is available may depend, in part at least, on where in the world you are. Also be aware that nothing commercially available is likely to remain secure for ever.

A quick follow up .. I've been browsing the web a bit and it seems clear that Word 2000 encryption is not secure.

Thanks Tony for the messages you gave.

Is there maybe a good encrypting tool to make the documents more secure?

Michelle.

Secure in what way? In any total way, so NO ONE can open it and read it? I doubt that very much.

What exactly are you trying to be secure to?

We tend to use WinZip's 256 bit AES encryption. It's a pretty robust level of encryption, and it's Free!! Same as Tony, I'm no security expert, but we did bounce this off our security expert in Dallas, and he was OK with it. Another option might be PGP, which is another compression tool with a high level of encryption.
