Hi all (and especially Shade :hi: )

I'm considering to invest in the software Virtual PC for Mac (for furhter details please see http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/virtualpc/virtualpc.aspx)

I?m running the software successfully on Windows and wondering if anyone have any experience with it on the Mac-plattform.

TIA
Dennis

Hi, Dennis. I don't have the latest versions of VPC. My latest was v. 4 or 5 which was Mac OS 8 at the time. Quite slow, never worked as it should.

In my reading of VPC 7 for OS X, it has been improved considerably. The problem you might run into, is that it requires either 10.2.8 or even 10.3, which I think you indicated you don't have (10.1.5?) and won't move beyond.

Maybe check out this thread:

Hi Rich :hi:

I have very good experience with virtual machines on Windows, both with vmWare and Virtual PC 2004.

Thanks for the info. You?re right that I will not upgrade the os due to the older hardware so I will take Your info and see if I will upgrade the hardware first.

Thanks Rich!

Kind regards,
Dennis

Weird as I with wmWare 4.5 and on Linux/Windows as host(s) can run in 800 x 600 if necessary.

Thanks for the URL and although it seems it have been improved it seems it does not do the work excellent so I guess MS need some time to develop it furhter.

Kind regards,
Dennis

Hi Dennis,

you said you use VPC on Windows. Can you help me to set it to use the network? I use VPC 2004 and simply cant see other machines nor browse the web.

I think Dennis is considering VPC (Virtual OC) which is a Mac program that runs an emulation of Windows on the Mac, not VPC on Windows.

Hi guys,

No, I'm on wmware on the Windows-platform and VPC 2004 can't compete with it. For some time I ago I did some tests with VPC 2004 and although MSFT have made some good improvements it does not stand up towards vmware.

As for Mac it looks like I will make a major upgrade during the summer since I will do a huge consultant-job on the Mac-platform for a swedish Newspaper-company. Let see if I will need VPC for it or not.

Kind regards,
Dennis

Dennis,
I've been using Virtual PC 6/Windows 2000 with a G4-466 for the past year (and versions 2, 3 and 4 before that). This version doesn't run on the G5 computers, but does an adequate job with Excel VBA, Internet Explorer. Adequate means slow, but workable.

I have read that Virtual PC 7 is a little faster in some aspects (and of course is compatible with G5 computers). It also restores the ability to print files and it supposedly doesn't crash when Windows 2000 wants to do a live update (both of these problems resulted from the version 6.1 upgrade that Microsoft released after having bought the package from Connectix). The increased hardware specs are probably due to the use of Windows XP Pro as the default operating system. Windows 2000 will definitely be faster.

Tuning Virtual PC for speed is a real art. Turning off Norton AntiVirus and allocating only 256 MB of RAM definitely help.

If you haven't discovered it, MacWindows is a pretty good resource http://www.macwindows.com/VPC7.html

Brad,

Thanks for the input and for the link - highly appreciated.

I know now that I will do the job which means I will upgrade my Mac-platform.

Tuning is always a tricky part as the computer(s) become more vulnerably unless we shut down the connection to the internet.

Kind regards,
Dennis
