I may need to buy a laptop and I am concerned about:
1. Ease of adding/replacing components such as modem, memory, hard drive and CD-RW/DVD drive.
2. Whether system comes with OS on CD, or just a recovery CD.
3. Best brands/models for reliability and support.
Recommendations?
Pointers to sources of information?

Hi Howard,
I don't have much experience with laptops, just a little. For #1 & #2, I'd stay away from Dell or Gateway. They don't give you the original OS (which is cheap imho), and are generally problematic; not to mention all the recalls Dell is having at the moment. I've heard good things about IBM & Acer though. Although I'm not the most qualified to talk about this, thought I'd throw my 2 pence in.

I've also heard that Toshiba has excellent support.

Hi Howard,
The poll here (http://www.mrexcel.com/board2/viewtopic.php?t=103470&highlight=laptop) probably isn't much use, but the substance is a discussion on laptops from not too long ago.
Hope it helps,
