I receive an "Application defined or Object defined error" when running this line on my home computer. I'm running XP at home and work, and Office 2003 as well. I checked allthe audio stuff and all--then again, it says application defined error. Any thoughts??

Let's say from the immediate window
application.speech.speak ("the time is" & time)

Beep commands come through, wav files can be played, etc.
Speech and Speak both appear as usable items in the object list.

Do you have any Voices avail ?

Control panel > Speech > text to speech > voice selection

Yeah--Microsoft Sam is there and the test comes thru clear. I'm confused because the error seems to be application/object based.

OK-a quick check to the MSDN. Text to Speech and associated functions are not installed with Excel-UNTIL a request is made to use the option. By opening the Text to Speech toolbar and selecting an option (in Excel), the utility is installed. BUT NOT (in my case) when the VBA editor is running as well (?).
