well, they did pause for a brief second before diving in...I think if the siren was off they probably would have been more aware. seems like they treat the siren like a cloak of invincibility

If you watch Tim, they do initially stop at the water, so they are obviously thinking about it. But then they rev it up, and dive in. You can tell from the response of all of the bystanders just how stupid an action it was.

As I said, what hope have we got?

Well, it does seem to be a pretty dumb thing to do. But they appear to be in an emergency and they probably said to themselves "C'mon, the house is right down the street! We gotta give it a shot!" Who knows?

I think they were just a bit too arrogant about the situation, as Tim said they probably thought they were invincible.
