Constructing a series in Excel by dragging

Hi, If I write '1' and '2' in two subsequent cells in excel and then drag using mouse then I can automatically get next values like : 3,4,5....... . However I am looking for some tweaks where I write 'A 1', 'A 2' in subsequent cells and, then dragging will result in displaying 'A 3', 'A 4',..............etc. Is it possible at all in excel?

and FYI, holding down Control when you drag changes its behaviour.
