How do I add or delete a note?

When I place the mouse pointer over the icon of an excel file, a note appears. How do I delete or edit the note?

Its a Comment, and you can right click on the cell and choose Edit , Add or Delete Comments!

Thanks, but what about on the actual icon of a excel file and not a cell?

You can change the author by opening the file and going to file-properties.
Search the site for more information on properties.

Are you referring to the little text box that pops up when your mouse hovers over any file/folder on the desktop or in the Windows Explorer window?

If yes, then you can go into the Windows Explorer (this is XP I'm talking about), menu Tools->Options->View Tab and then it should be the check-box that's about 9th from the bottom. It reads something like "Show popup description of folders and files on desktop" (sorry for not being accurate on this, my Windows is (sad) not in English...). Press to uncheck if you want to eliminate this popup.

Or....open your excel file goto FILE, PROPERTIES and change what you want
