View Full Version : Solved: Outlook2003 and ActiveSync

I recently upgraded from ol2k to ol2003 (on WinXP system) and found that ActiveSync (to sync ol with a phone) no longer works. I get the dreaded 85010014 error which means ol APIs are not cooperating. I copied the relevant pst file to a computer running ol2k and that syncs fine, so it is not the pst file (maybe).

I have retained the old (ol98-ol2k) pst files with ol2003. They are fully supported, seem to work fine and I saw no reason to update the files. But maybe this is the problem. Has anyone had any experience with this combination, i.e., ol2003, earlier pst files and ActiveSync?

I have a few other things to check, but if anyone has any thoughts, they would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

1. Latest version of AS?

2. Try syncing with OL not running

3. from the web - sounds reasonable

Microsoft Outlook 2003 and Microsoft Outlook 2007 have a larger overall size limit 20 gigabytes (GB) for the personal folders (.pst) file than the .pst files that are in the earlier versions of Microsoft Outlook such as Microsoft Outlook 2000 & XP. In Outlook 2002 and earlier, the .pst files are in the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) format, and the overall size has a limit of 2 gigabytes (GB) only. Unicode PST file has the overall size limit of 20 GB. Just to avoid corruption due to exceeding the size limit of 2 GB imposed on ANSI PST file, you need to convert your ANSI PST file to Unicode PST file to enhance the size limit to 20 GB. Convert Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2003 using PST Conversion Tool.

Good luck

thanks for the reply.

1) I am using AS 4.5, the latest version I could find.

2) I have tried syncing with ol running, not running, etc., still get the error. I also tried another sync program from LapLink and that said tha ol was not installed ??

3) I tried using the new style of pst file, but had the same problems. Most of the info I have read elsewhere suggests that uninstalling ol and then reinstalling ol seems to solve the problem, but no one has been able to explain why. My theory is that ol might activate some special setting or tweak during install if it detects AS or a similar type s/w -- I know, it's a stretch. I tried the remove/install of ol and it did not work.

Then I tried a more rigorous approach of uninstalling AS and ol, rebooting, installing AS, rebooting and then installing ol. That seemed to work -- other than my silly theory, I do not know why.

I did the remove/install of ol after trying many other things. ol on the target computer has 7 separate profiles and dozens of pst files. I was afraid that a reinstall might screw things up and I would have to rebuild profiles. I used the Add/Remove programs approach in the Control Panel and everything came through without a scratch.
