How do you turn off automatic numbering in msword?

I am typing a ms word document, and have a list of about five things. I want to manually type the numbers because they are not in a normal order, but it keeps automatically inserting the next number. I know there is a way to not have the numbers automatically inserted but can't remember. How do you turn off the automatic numbering in word?

I've gone to format, bullets and numbering and checked none for numbering but it still happens.

Maybe the current text is a style that includes numbering. You may have to change the style. I'm guessing since you don't provide the document.

If that is not the problem maybe you can post a sample without any important info by hitting post reply at the bottom left of the last post and then scroll down and look for manage attachments.

It is likely set as an AutoCorrect Option. See Tools > AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat as you type. Uncheck Automatic numbered lists.
