You may want to read our FAQ on Hacking and Cracking files (http://www.vbaexpress.com/forum/faq.php?faq=psting_faq_item#faq_hack_faq_item). It has some information in it which you may find useful.

As far as breaking the links, check out Bill Manville's FindLinks.xla add-in (http://www.bmsltd.ie/MVP/Default.htm), I still think it's the best utility of it's kind out there.
