Can I set somewhere, that the default for the Data area is Sum, and not Count?

If the data in that field is all numeric, it does default to Sum, otherwise it defaults to Count.

Did you want it to be Sum even if it contains non-numeric data?

A similar thing happens in PT's if you try to group a field with dates by Year, Qtr, etc.. Usually when I have time as a column header

If any of the values of the data in the field that I want to make a column header are non-dates, I can't use Group to total by Year, etc.
