View Full Version : How Normal Are You?
johnske

How normal do you think you are? Just take this test, it will only take a minute, start at the top, scroll down slowly, do exactly as it says and don't PEEK.
When you've finished, scroll back to the top and enter your own result in the poll.
This is a fun "test"... AND kind of spooky at the same time! Give it a try, and you'll see how many people you know fall into the same percentage as you.
At the end of the test, you will be asked a question. Answer it immediately. Don't stop and think about it. Just say the first thing that pops into your mind.
Now... just follow the instructions as quickly as possible.
Do not go to the next calculation before you have finished the previous one..
There's no need to write or memorize the answers, just do it mentally.
You may be surprised...
Start:
How much is:
15 + 6
3 + 56
89 + 2
12 + 53
75 + 26
25 + 52
63 + 32
I know! Calculations are hard work, but it's nearly over..
Come on, just one more sum...
123 + 5
QUICK! THINK ABOUT A COLOR AND A TOOL!
Scroll further to the bottom...
A bit more...
You just thought about a red hammer, didn't you?
If that was not your answer, you are among 2% of people who have a different, if not abnormal, mind.
If your answer contained either 'red' or 'hammer' (but not both) you are a bit of a sick puppy. (please enter your poll accordingly)
If your answer didn't contain either 'red' OR 'hammer' you are a really warped, sick and twisted individual  (please enter your poll accordingly)
98% of people doing this exercise would answer 'red hammer'. If you are one of these you are Normal. (please enter your poll accordingly).
If you doubt this 98% result, check the poll results later.

Yeah - just dont ask me why, :dunno I got it in an email & that was my answer also (a friend I'd sent it to thought 'green hammer' - so she's gotta be a bit of a sick puppy :rotlaugh: )

Red is one of the main base colors so I can see how that would be thought of when you are asked to quickly think of a color. But where does hammer come in?

Maybe cos when ppl are asked to do some mental arithmetic they feel like smashing something? (that's where the hammer'd come in handy)
It's probably also one of the most common tools, or at least the tool that ppl are introduced to first and it's also part of almost every conceivable type of tool kit

Very interesting... I was going to put myself down as a bit of a sick puppy... then realised there was a test... and ended up comfirming my own diagnosis
The strange thing is my usual reaction to think of a colour is blue or green - never red... it must be the math!!!

Hey Carlos,
I think the figure of 98% I was given applies to the general population - I was curious as to how many of us fit into that category - I'd expect there to be (seeing as we're here) a lot fewer 'normals' here

I voted Red Hammer. That is sooo twisted.
My own diagnosis? ...
With the cresending mathematics, it's like a pumping hammer in the recesses of our mind, thus relating to tools because we are all hiding the inner Tim-the-toolman child inside. That is where the hammer came from.
The red just confuses the heck outta me.

I have to admit to being a bit of a sick puppy - I'd have preferred to have been sick and twisted but never mind.
I came up with with red spanner.
There is a similar one where you have to choose a vegetable - just in case you haven't seen it I won't give the game away - and I was 'normal' with that one.

And I came up with a red trowel. However, I thought hammer so quickly after that, I had to catch myself. I might have put hammer had I not been so diligent...

I've actually seen this before, so I knew the answer about two lines in. As I remember, though, I was normal last time.
Red spanner, Tony? I guess it rhymes with hammer... sort of. But Trowel, Anne? LOL!

Out of curiosity Tony, what is a spanner to you folks on the other side of the lake? To use here, it's a fire tool (http://www.firequip.com/wrenches.htm). Does it mean something else to you? Just curious.

Dunno bout the UK, but in Oz a hammer is often referred to by motor mechanics as an "American spanner" :rotlaugh: (I think it was a swipe at the "brute-force" approach that US car manufacturers used to take when more powerful cars were required {vs the European method of improving on what was available})
Ever worked as a motor mechanic Tony?
Ken Puls
04-29-2005, 03:49 PM
A spanner in the UK and Oz is a wrench, right?
Don't know about your guys' neck of the woods', but here a useful maxim is "the closest thing becomes a hammer". Complete opposite of what you have above! (Oz spanner becomes a hammer!) :rotlaugh:
TonyJollans
04-29-2005, 04:00 PM
Yup, a spanner is a wrench - though not normally quite like those in Zack's link - more like this: http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0001IWC8O.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
I guess if the closest thing becomes a hammer it doesn't matter what tool we first think of - it becomes a hammer - no wonder 98% of people get it right
johnske

A spanner in the UK and Oz is a wrench, right?...etc
Wrench? Wrench is a US word (and it appears Canadian) for a spanner, in Oz we use spanners, of which there can be ring-spanners, open-ended spanners (Tonys' link), shifting spanners, tube/pipe spanners, spark-plug spanners, etc. to do/undo nuts.
We only use wrenches (sorta like self-locking pliers) for doing/undoing round pipes that have no head on them, they're only used on nuts with heads as an absolute last resort when the head's been rounded off through mis-treatment.

I have an aversion to physical work. I used a red hammer 40-50 years ago - that was the last thing on my mind!!
The sky is BLUE (in the "normal" sense of that word)!!! And as a former, but resurgent mathematician, I couldn't get me head out of the blue sky!!
Thus, I am really warped. But then,... ya'll knew that! :D

This's getting kinda inneresting. To my way of thinking, if you 'fail' the test it's probably cos you think outta the norm cos you've got a creative mind (which was a bit of a disappointment to me cos I passed). Given that the site attracts a lotta creative minds, the fact that (so far) there are a lot more 'sick puppies' here than in the normal population thus doesn't really surprise me.

Here is another one, but it is important that you concentrate.....
I am gonna display a set of numbers...once you scroll down far enough you will see them
remember, you MUST concentrate...it is important....
Once you see the set of numbers pick one of them and keep scrolling....
get ready.....
okay....concentrate!
1 2 3 4
now, the only question I have is......
Why 3?

:cuckoo: ahh, well it works better on a bar napkin. If you show the numbers to people and put a little pressure on them to pick fast when the see them, they pick 3 99% of the time.
Won a lot of free drinks on that one...did it to the entire bar at once telling them to be quiet (as a bartender in a former life)..wrote why 3? on the big board, and they all went nuts trying to figure it out... :cuckoo:
I am completely certifiable wacky...definitely in the 2% of the 2%:nya:
