Hi,

I'm interested in creating a Stock Market Portfolio Database and was wondering if anyone knows of a sample database or good website that may assist me in the design.

I'm aware there are many I can purchases but I would like to look into designing a basic one so that I can improve my database skills and have control over reports, etc.

Hope someone can help.

Many thanks
Tammyl

tammyl, how will you be entering the data in to the database?
I could help you with the design, but I have never designed a Stock Market Portfolio Database. Although I have designed lots of other Accounting type databases.

Hi OBP,
Manual entry initially as i only have a few shares but they have vesting dates, plus taxes to pay, plus i'd like to calculate gains when i sell, then taxes applicable to the profit. I also purchased the same share at different times so have a few different purchase prices.

I might start the design with what i know then try to improve when all the information is entered. I thought that there would be alot of people interested in doing the same thing so didn't want to re-invent the wheel, but no better way to learn I guess that to jump in and start.

Thanks

That is probably the best thing to do, if you need help with the design just let me know.
You want to think about what you want out of the database, in that way you can decide what data is needed and it's structure, as well as what Queries & Reports you will need.

Back around 2003 I started portfolio manager for a small company who unfortunately went under during before design. It was an Access db, but relied on embedded Excel documents for calculations and reports. The db itself served merely to hold client/sibling information with a complex series of 'to do' dates. Bottom line, it is probably easier to start with Excel where hundreds of templates exist, rather than endlessly re-designing db fields to fit your needs.

I have attached one of the Excel templates I used. The initial tabs will not be of interest, but the last few tabs may contain layouts which you can incorporate into your design. .02 Stan
