View Full Version : bulleted list without renumbering

I need to create a bulleted numbering scheme where when a bulleted number is removed after being added the numbering takes the next number that was available before the number was removed.

e.g.

1. bullet
2. bullet
3. bullet

then 3 is removed an another bullet is added.

1. bullet
2. bullet
4. bullet

Thus a bullet cannot be reused.

Any ideas?

They do not work that way. If they are connected, they are sequential.

You may want to consider a structured table.

The hard way would be to re-start the List Numbering, but you'd have to to it manually after each change

We usually just leave the deleted number in marked as deleted since as Gerry says, it's not designed to work like that

1. Old text
2. Oldtext
3. Deleted
4. New text

"but you'd have to to it manually after each change"

Yes, but if you are going to do that, you may as well not have numbered list in the first place, and use plain text. Since essentially you would be forcing Word to act as if it WAS plain-text.

Maybe macropod can suggest an alternative using SEQ fields.

Even with SEQ fields AFAIK you'd have to have a special code to increment by 2 (and then possibly by 3, 4, 527 depending on how many items you delete).

Yeah, I know. I tried it to see if I could use SEQ easily for doing something like this...ummmm..........no.

Sorry DEF, this is siomply not the way lists work.
