View Full Version : Solved: Migrating Word 2003 Macros to Word 2010?

Hello,

Has anybody here migrated their Word 2003 macros to Word 2010 -- that is with KEEPING the toolbars/pictures/buttons that each macro was once assigned to?

I've been able to move some macros to add-ins in Word 2010; but that is very PLAIN JANE and not user-friendly.

I really would like the TOOLBARS that had the pictures (I crafted) on each button. These WERE very user-friendly when they were in Word 2003, and I would like them restored.

Can anybody help me on this?

 Thanks!
Janet

Jan,

You are going to have to give up on the idea of toolbars because they just don't exist in Word2010. You can certainly create your own custom tabs with custom groups containing custom controls (that will run macros) and add virtually any image to the control.

See: http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/Ribbon_Custom_Icons.htm

And that is (one of them) the reason I despise 2007/2010. Sorry but I still fail to see how we gained anything with those ribbons. Let's see....

"You can certainly create your own custom tabs with custom groups containing custom controls (that will run macros) and add virtually any image to the control."

Hmmmmmmmmm, does that not sounds somewhat like.....a toolbar????

Gerry,

Sure yes. A custom tab>group>control combination can certainly look and act like a toolbar so I suppose in a sense it is.

I am not sure I can say that I like the ribbon, but I have gotten used to it and I have enjoyed trying to bend it to my will. Like you, I despised it when I first started to use it.

I never really dug that deep into the commandbars object of Word2003 since with the full customization of the UI by the user I rarely needed to.

And with that...I rest my case.

Actually, the thing that ticks me off even more than the silliness of the ribbon (yes, yes, you can finally get it to do....what we already had), is the removal of FileSearch. WHY was that removed? It certainly can not be stated that it was not being used. It certainly was being used. It sure seems to be a deliberate dumbing down, as it took a deliberate removal of it from the Object Model.

Greg & Jerry,

Thanks for both of your prompt replies.

However. . .

This evening I DIRECTLY attached a document template containing a toolbar from Word 2003 (instead of selecting one on the GLOBAL template add-ins list).

And the toolbar showed up, complete with buttons, AND it labeled it "Custom Toolbars" underneath???

Not all the macro's worked, but most of them did.

Is it only possible to have "Custom Toolbars" if they are loaded in from somewhere else? :(

Any insight is appreciated.

As always, I treasure the knowledge and advice I receive from this forum.

Regards,
Janet

Jan,

What you describe is how Word2007/2010 works. If you have custom toolbar or menu stored in a Word2003 template or document and you open that document in Word2007 then the commands will appear on the AddIns tab in one of two groups "Custom Menus" or "Custom Toolbars." For more on this and how to take advantage of it see:

"Is it only possible to have custom toolbars if they are loaded from someplace else?"

Yes. That is because as I have said before "toolbars" sort of don't exist in Word anymore.

You can create custom tabs with custom groups with custom controls (sort of like a toolbar but called something else). If you right click on the Word2010 ribbon you will see an option to customize the ribbon. Here is where you would create your custom tabs and groups and add controls sort of like the old customize menus and toolbars. The cabability is rather limited so if you want to get creative you will have to learn a little about ribbon customization using XML.

Good luck.

Greg,

Thanks for clarifying this for me. Custom groups and custom controls are something for me to read up on.

I marked the thread solved.

Thanks again,
Janet
