probably an old issue, but I have very little Outlook experience...

I have a customer who uses Outlook to store the vast majority of his documents, with a complicated folder setup that only he could be comfortable with.

His pst is well over a gigabyte (not sure how big it is now), and I've been told that when they get big, outlook files can become unstable. Don't know if it is true, but I'm more than worried.

What is the best way to backup the pst files? Does Outlook need to be closed for a backup to be successful?

Is it better to use a server-based pst file system or does that put a burden on the network and/or slow down Outlook?

As is evident, I know practically nothing about Outlook but am trying to support it.

One other question: is it possible to use/modify the Outlook Calendar from MS Access?

Currently using Office 2003 but am lobbying for a general upgrade to Office 2010.
