How to create a scaled down bar chart from a pivot table. Can this be done?

I use pivot tables to analyse and manipulate data. I have a large data set of which I need to report on trends. Is it possible to create a pivot table graph with x and y values? If so, how can this be done? I want to also create a bar chart that shows the upward trends for each month in a scale down format represented in a pivot table. Can this be done? If so, how can this be done? Would I need to use vba to perform this?
