Solved: set excel 2007 as default

I have office 2003 and 2007 installed on my computer and I need to have them both. It used to be that 2007 opened up all of my excel files. In order to open a file in 2003, I had to run excel 2003 and do file open from there.
somehow, overnight this changed. the default is now based on the file extension. so .xls opens in 2003 and .xlsx opens in 2007. How can I change this back that all excel files default to 2007?

What was the reason for the initial behavior? That's exactly what I'd like my Excel to do..... if .xls open with 2003 and if .xlsm open with 2007.
