How do you get a line in Word to stay put without moving to the right as you type on it? Trying to make a template.

What kind of line? (How did you make it)

Is it a shape? if so double click on it:
Go to Layout | Advanced | Uncheck Move with text and Check Lock anchor..

Hi Austen,
There are a few suggestions here.

If you just want to switch overtyping on, press the Insert key - it acts a sa toggle switching overtype/insert modes.

Maybe Austen should be learning how to create fill-in forms.

Austen could you pleace clarify what line you mean? :yes

Malcom added the form part to the title but I don't think you're asking about forms...

What I want to do is be able to type on a part of a document that someone has formatted it as Underline. When you try to type it shoves the line right as you type. Is there a way around that? I have not been able to find it if there is.

Humm don't get you...are you talking about a tableader (UnderLine) perhaps..

Could you post a small example in which we can duplicate this behaviour?

Try typing on the line in the attachment

I see thanx for explaining.

Is this what you mean by overtyping:

Not exactly. The line should remain stationary as you type so what you type is underlined. Some of my co-workers get documents that it is necessary to type over the underline.

Ok so if I read you correct:

* A underline must be present to the whole length of the line the whole time.

So you start typing on a line and the line will stay there so the word get's underlined but the rest of the line stays put?

Open a new document
Well you need a style that's underlined or just press underline on the toolbar.
Click on the ruler a tab character will appear (Left tab is default) Now pick it up with your mouse and slide it to the right margin (Make sure you can still see it)
The insertion point is still at the begining of the document so just press tab to fill the line with the underline.
Press enter + tab as much as you like to create more underlined lines.
Now just set your cursor somewhere an begin typing.

Enjoy!
