View Full Version : [SOLVED:] Help testing a VB application
Anne Troy
08-16-2005, 12:54 PM
Okay, I could post this at RentACoder, but I prefer to do it here.
I have a VB application and some sample data for it.
It locks up the PC at a particular point, but only on 2 machines out of 18 (currently).
I am desperate to have this thing tested by about 20 people.
I'm happy to pay $20 per machine for it (which is coming out of the client's pocket, not mine).
So far, the machines it locks on are WinXP, and yet I know that at least a dozen of the ones it DOES work on are also XP.
It's not a big app, and it's not real intrusive or anything.
Please PM me with an email address and I'll send the particulars.

That's okay. I need the nonsense, Joost!!
I forgot to tell everybody this part:
To import data, just go to the Get Leads window. Put in 1.5 for the interest rate, 6 for the APR, then browse to the file and import.

Hi Anne,
The programme does not go to the Print Offers screen. It doesn't totally hang either: although the egg timer is showing, if I click on View Data, that screen opens and the egg timer reverts to a pointer, and I can still quit.
Edit:
I got the interest rate bit from the Help file, so that bit is OK :yes

Seams to be the same over here but the records are still not showing correctly in the Listbox. (I think I have a import issue)

:D
Okay. My apologies. I provided poor instructions. I have now updated the readme to say:
1. Download, unzip, and install keygendm.zip
2. Download the sampledata.csv file.
3. Download, unzip, and install setupdm.zip
You will be asked for a registration number. Run keygen and paste the registration number in, and hit Get Key. Copy and paste the key into the DealMaker application when prompted by the Dealmaker application (after you install and run it).
Enter any state's long name and abbreviation. For instance, Pennsylvania and PA or Hawaii and HI.
Import the data from the sample file. To do that, type an interest rate (less than 10, so 1 is fine), type an APR (6 is realistic), and then browse to the CSV file.
If you are using foreign regional settings, I don't care if you can't import properly. It's not an issue 'cause it'll only be used in the US.
Hit Print Offers.
Does your PC lock up and NOT allow you to go to the Print Offers screen?
If so, let me know and I may interrogate you about your system, LOL.
I cannot thank you enough for this.

No issues with the PC when I hit Print Offers.
Let me know if You want more info.
All the very best to You and send my best regards to Scott as well :)

I can't believe how incredibly helpful you guys are. So much so, that I have to ask again!!!
In the SAME web folder, there is now a Dealmaker.zip file. If you can extract that and overwrite the old Dealmaker.exe file in your C:\program files\Dealmaker folder, and see if the problem occurs again, I would VERY much appreciate it!!
If you succeeded in being able to see the Print Offers screen, there is nothing for you to do. If you did NOT, then this one's for you, guys!! We're seeing if we've got our fix.
Previously, we only had two people who paid for this app having a problem. It was embarrassing to ask one of them to test for us!! All the rest of us could not reproduce it. So, if you STILL get the error with these new exe file, then please post back here with your OS and any service packs.
Thanks a ton!!!

Hey Anne,
Okay, tested with both my wife's PC and my laptop. Both are running identical versions of Win XP Pro (SP2) (Build is 5.1.2600). Both are patched and running the same updates.
My wife's PC ran it without issue. My laptop causes it to hang on the Print Offers screen. Overwriting the DealMaker.exe file made no difference. Still hangs.
Could it be something besides OS? Or an optional component? Just in case... the following are the optional windows updates that I have not applied on my laptop:
Ken Puls
08-16-2005, 08:35 PM
And my wife's optional windows updates that have not been applied are shown below. First thing I notice is that I have the .Net framework installed, but I would imagine that Dennis does as well...
Per Dreamboat's request, I am posting my comments to her regarding some testing on the DealMaker appl.
Well, I am done testing. DealMaker seems to run OK on both my WinXP machines (Dell9100 and IBM T40 laptop):thumb:thumb, and both Win2K machines (Dell XPS266 and "handbuilt" machine) hang when I try the PrintOffers option:banghead::banghead:. It is not a "hard" hang, i.e., I can nudge the appl to do other things, but it will not completely return control/focus back to the "top level". I can get out of it (exit the appl) by clicking on the QUIT button and manually clearing the screen.
Looking at process data, the DealMaker.exe process is not consuming cycles when it "hangs". Does DealMaker spawn another process when PrintOffers is clicked? The problem feels like either another process was spawned and is caught in a loop or DealMaker is waiting for input.

Yes. Consistent with my experience here as well. :yes

I get exactly the same results with the new as the old. A 'soft' hang as described by others - the easiest way to clear it seems to be to click twice on the taskbar icon (to minimise and then restore).
XP Pro SP1 (clean install on Sunday). No other patches applied. VB6 runtime installed but not .NET framework (will probably install it shortly). Office 2K3 Pro full install, Winzip 9.0, Firefox 1.0.6. That's about all I have at present, what else do you want to know?
TonyJollans
08-17-2005, 04:41 AM
Actually just had a thought that may be significant - my Program Files Folder is on my D: drive. It's all 'correctly' done via Windows install options, but some software doesn't cope with it properly.
Ken Puls
08-17-2005, 09:01 AM
Hmmm... for my own: Office 2k3 Pro Full Install, Firefox 1.0.6 as browser. Using WinRar, not Winzip though.

08-17-2005, 09:30 AM
Anne,
What is this? After updating I get the same situation in that the app "softly" hangs and I was able to shut down the app without any reboot of the system.
At present I use my laptop and it has MS Office 2003, VS.NET 2005 / VSTO 2.0 / Framework 2.0 / SQL Server 2005 / Zone Alarm / AV-software and with a minimum of services running.
At this stage I see no reason to monitor any activities or processes.
Have You been able to track down the error?
I will reinstall the first to see if the difference still exist.
Kind regards,
Dennis

Same configuration on my test machine I also had the same experience. This machine hower did have the app installed on: C:\
But if so many people experience this problem then it's time to go back to the drawing board cause the Help desk feese will be hugue. :yes

This one SHOULD fix it for anyone who was NOT able to run it before. However, we have concerns about running it on systems with network printers, so if you have THAT, we def'ly want you to test it!! (Ken, we know it don't work on YOUR network printers.)

Okay, Tony. The coder wasn't sleeping and saw your post. He asks:
While you were sleeping I went through the messages on the thread and fund that Tony is still facing some problems with the registration issue.
I created both the setups from scratch and tested on a fresh OS and all is working perfectly.
Having said that, I have uploaded two new setups on ftp again. Please request Tony to uninstall both DealMaker and the Keygenerator from his machine and also delete the folders from Program Files. Then install the new ones.
