Saving A Excel Macros File

I download a program that has excel worksheets, I want to fill out the worksheet, re name it and save it, keeping the original unchanged. I keep getting an error message saying either the format needs to be changed of the file is protected. What must I do to save the new file?

Did you download an xls file. Are you trying to save it as an excel 2007 file? Or the opposite?
