Conditional Formatting

Can anyone help with a problem i thought (Wrongly) would be very simple

I need conditional formatting so that if a cell value is less than today the background goes red

This is driving me nuts and seemed so simple

*Using A1 as the date to be evaluated.*
Set Conditional Format for "Formula Is" and place this in it:

=A1<TODAY()

Then just format patterns to Red.
