Happy Birthday! Have a Great Day!

:hi: Thanks to all for noticing an old guy. Tony, a year doesn't seem like such a large difference as we get older does it?

My daughter is here today trying to get me to quit smoking etc, theoretically to make my birthday more pleasant. Good thing I love her so much. Youngest son called between classes to wish me a happy birthday. Can't really ask for more from life.

All the things I'm missin'
Good vittles, love and kissin'
Wishin' my girl was by my side

here's another one
..........................................
Just one year of love,
Is better than a lifetime alone.
One sentimental moment in your arms,
Is like a shooting star right through my heart.

this should have come from the 60's
...................................................
I talk of freedom
You talk of the flag
I talk of revolution
You'd much rather brag
And as the decibels of this disenchanting
Discourse continue to damnpen the day
The coin flips again and again and again
And again as our sanity walks away

Interesting choice Steve. http://vbaexpress.com/forum/images/smilies/beerchug.gif

Wonder which version of Rawhide you listen to?

I don't know Live at all, have heard of them, never heard them. Should I be investing my hard-earned Euros on an album? Did they release an unplugged album? Bear in mind that I love music from all ages (14th century to today), but I am not a Queen fan (opposite side of the spectrum in fact), but I am not, for instance, a Queen fan (opposite side of the spectrum in fact), and I abhor metal in any form.

Live is hard rock and roll too. Their lyrics are the main draw for me. Queen, whether you like them or not you have to admit they were talented musicians and songwriters. I find it interesting that you love music from all ages but rule out metal....I am no great fan of some styles but I listen to all styles looking for insights from the artists...

what is the opposite side of the spectrum....?

If you like instrumental try Jesse Cook. He has several albums Tempest, Vertigo, Gravity to mention a few.

Public Sub Happy_Birthday()
Dim bday As Integer
For Each bday In life
MsgBox ("Happy Birthday!")
Next
End Sub

I know this won't work, but you get the idea ;)
Happy birthday man!

Hi Steve,
I noticed TrippyTom's error, it should be:
Dim bday as Long
The For...Next loop looks good though.

Happy birthday,
Malcolm

Its the thought that counts TrippyTom. I love it. Malcolm you can't fix a gesture...but I know you can't help tryin.:winking2:

I'll try to post a link to an mp3 by this weekend. I've got the kids interested in acustic guitars finally. Thought their electric phase would never end....

Live is hard rock and roll too.

Doesn't sound my cup of tea, so I won't spend too much effort on them.

I am afraid I don't. Talented yes, but not as musicisans or songwriters IMO.

I find it interesting that you love music from all ages but rule out metal....I am no great fan of some styles but I listen to all styles looking for insights from the artists...

I just find it a derivative noise, with no great perception on musical techniques, emotional intensity, or even danceability.

what is the opposite side of the spectrum....?

I was referring to opposite of fan. If I cared enough, I would say that I detest them.

If you like instrumental try Jesse Cook. He has several albums Tempest, Vertigo, Gravity to mention a few.

Oddly, although I can listen happily to classical, and instrumental world music, instrumental rock is hard. One track, fine, two okay, but an album?

Then I'll admit it for you. ;)

Actually, you couldn't be further from the truth; or should I say, any more opposite the spectrum. ;)

Mostly there is perception, if not in all of it. Musical techniques? Oh by far! There is so much talent in Rock/Metal that we couldn't begin to count the amount of talent.

You want to talk about emotional intensity? Well, as emotion does vary from person to person, it's a little hard to make one understand what their emotions do not. Let me suffice to say, that it is probably (IMHO) the MOST emotionally intense music I've ever heard. And if you don't believe me, well, if I were rich, I'd take you to a few concerts to show you first hand. It can be truly amazing.

Dancability. This also varies between people. One can dance to anything, even the beat of the drum in their own head. ;) Can't quite put a label like that on any music, now can you. To do so would be closed-minded.

Live rocks the proverbial cazbah and not to promote the practice but get yourself a P2P program and frind this Live track - "Lightning Crashes", its probably their most famous and also one of the most emotionally intense songs I've ever heard. I've also been to see them in concert twice.

And I'm sorry Bob but IMHO, metal is the music with the most expression. I'm not talking black metal or death metal because I like to hear the lyrics but the others. Like Iron Maiden, an oldie but a goodie and so much expression, every song of their's tells a story and thats the fantastic thing about their music.

Andrew;?

P.S. Going to see the offspiring in concert this weekend at the Brixton Academy in London, its going to be awesome!

WHAT!! Queens Bohemian Rhapsody is a derivative noise? - Surely you jest! This is regarded by almost everyone in the music industry as one of the most outstanding pieces of music of any kind from the twentieth century.

I just find it a derivative noise, with no great perception on musical techniques, emotional intensity, or even danceabilityQueens singer Freddie Mercury composed most of their music and is one of the composers who have achieved the most success in bringing complex music to the masses. He was able to use an impressively rich vocabulary of advanced harmonic, rhythmic and structural features that at the same time remained catchy and earned huge commercial success. (We should also note that his early training was in the field of classical music).

His songwriting was unique, demonstrating influence from a variety of sources, but with a strong individual sense of melody, harmony, and complex orchestration.

With a wide vocal range and a somewhat operatic technique, he was one of the most versatile and technically accomplished singers to work in the pop idiom. He was the composer of many of Queen's hits, including "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Somebody to Love", and "We Are the Champions".

A lot of us quite enjoy the following 'lack of emotional intensity' from Freddie...

Bohemian Rhapsody
Is this the real life-
Is this just fantasy-
Caught in a landslide-
No escape from reality-
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see-
I?m just a poor boy,i need no sympathy-
Because I?m easy come,easy go,
A little high,little low,
Anyway the wind blows, doesn?t really matter to me,
To me

Mama,just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger,now he?s dead,
Mama,life had just begun,
But now I?ve gone and thrown it all away-
Mama ooo,
Didn?t mean to make you cry-
If I?m not back again this time tomorrow-
Carry on,carry on,as if nothing really matters-

Too late,my time has come,
Sends shivers down my spine-
Body?s aching all the time,
Goodbye everybody-I?ve got to go-
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth-
Mama ooo- (any way the wind blows)
I don?t want to die,
I sometimes wish I?d never been born at all-

I see a little silhouetto of a man,
Scaramouche, scaramouche will you do the fandango-
Thunderbolt and lightning-very very frightening me-
Galileo,galileo,
Galileo galileo
Galileo figaro-magnifico-
But I?m just a poor boy and nobody loves me-
He?s just a poor boy from a poor family-
Spare him his life from this monstrosity-
Easy come easy go-,will you let me go-
Bismillah! no-,we will not let you go-let him go-
Bismillah! we will not let you go-let him go
Bismillah! we will not let you go-let me go
Will not let you go-let me go
Will not let you go let me go
No,no,no,no,no,no,no-
Mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go-
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me,for me,for me-

So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye-
So you think you can love me and leave me to die-
Oh baby-can?t do this to me baby-
Just gotta get out-just gotta get right outta here-

Nothing really matters,
Anyone can see,
Nothing really matters-,nothing really matters to me,

Any way the wind blows....

Saturday after my birthday everyone around my house was behaving strangly. About 4pm my son (age 20) told me he wanted me to go with him to a place called the elephant run in tulsa where young aspiring musicians are allowed to get on stage and sing and play. He has been going there for a while now and I was curious. When we got in his car and took off he headed in the opposite direction.....I was confused but said nothing fearing that I was about to be dropped of at a nursing home somewhere or worse(doh).....we arrived in a college town in NE Okla and I was treated to a ticket to see ZZ Top....It was a great time and a great birthdday present.....kids these days....

Sweet, your son has good taste. I took my cousin to see The Offspring at Brixton Academy in London this past weekend for his birthday. When he found out where we going his face lit up like a five year old in a candy store with his daddy's platinum card.

And the show was awesome too.

If you like Offspring, take a listen To The Wedding Present, especially the great 'George Best' album. Not only a great album, but a classic picture of the greatest footballer ever, bar non e (Pele who?).

My daughter introduced me to Offspring, I introduced her to the Clash and Wedding Present, amongst others, in return.
