Everyone in Townsville (and the rest of Queensland) are cock-a-hoop that our local team, the North Queensland Cowboys  , are playing in the NRL (National Rugby League) grand final on Sunday. :yay

The Cowboys are still rated as the underdogs, despite the fact that in the semi-final held last weekend they beat the grand final favourites and then competition leaders 29 to 0

The is a real 'David and Goliath' match, Townsville has a population of only around 150,000 to draw players from, whereas their competitors this weekend is a Sydney team with a population of 4 million to draw players from and this is effectively a "small provincial city versus the rest of Australia" game.

During the semi-finals last Sunday afternoon the streets were completely devoid of cars and ppl as everyone sat around glued to the TV while the Cowboys comprehensively thrashed the competition leaders. :thumb

Most of Townsville are now headed to the Sydney Olympic stadium for the Grand Final. All flights are completely booked out, a jumbo jet has also been chartered for fans (at $1300 a head) and those unable to get a flight are either driving (2000+ km), on buses, or headed to Darwin to try and get on a Sydney flight from there.

For those that remain, the council are putting up giant TV screens, street parties are planned all over the city, and all the local movie theaters have suspended all movies and are screening the game live instead.

Just thought I'd share a bit of the local excitement... :beerchug:

GO COWBOYS GO!!

I sense perhaps that this might be a big event, then again, I could be wrong ^_^

You know, the rest of the world never heard how this turned out. Mind letting us in on it? (I meant to ask, but didn't see the thread right off hand earlier.)

(Don't wanna talk about it...)

Actually, it was an exciting and close-fought game. The Cowboys stunned everyone by drawing first blood very early on in the game, the lead then swung back and forth for a while but the others slowly drew ahead due to some bad decisions and disallowed tries by the referee.

Although just a little disappointing, it was a great night out and everyone agreed the Cowboys certainly had no reason to be ashamed of their performance and a win was hoping for a bit much. After all, it's a matter of progress - last year it was from obscurity to an appearance in the semi-finals, this year it was a win in the semi-final and an appearance in the grand final, next year it'll be win, win, win all the way - and by so much the refs bad decisions can't affect the result
