Pasting text from other application into Word changes format of entire paragraph

I am pasting text from a web page into a paragraph in Word. The web page text looks like it's Arial 14 pt or so. The Word document paragraph is formatted as Calibri 11 point. When I paste, the whole paragraph (not just the pasted text) changes to Heading 1 style, Times New Roman 24 point. Why in the world would it do that? And how do I make it stop?

HTML and Word formats are entirely different from one another. Take this forum for example. If you paste the content of your post into Word using the source formatting you get

and that title is TNR 18 point Bold! If you want a particular format then use one of the other paste options e.g. the Merge Format option

or simply paste as unformatted text and format it in Word.

But why would it change the format of the rest of the paragraph?
