Word was unable to read the document

I'm trying to open an .rtf extension file in Word 2010 but I'm getting the error message "Word was unable to read the document. " I have tried to open it in a different version of Word (2013) but the program will not let me. Does anyone know how to fix .rtf file?

Are you sure the file is actually an RTF-format file? Simply giving a file an RFT extension does not make it one. Try opening the file in NotePad. If it doesn't start with '{\rtf' it's not an RTF-format file.
