I have a word 2010 protected template in which I've selected areas to be edited by everyone and set read only protection.

I want to add a drawing canvas as an exception, but no matter what I try it does not allow me to draw or add shapes when the document is in restricted editing mode, even if it is highlighted when I check "highlight regions I can edit".

I suspect word stops all drawing in restricted editing mode, but I can't find any info to confirm this.

Is it possible to have a drawing panel in a word document while in restricted editing mode?

I've seen a workaround mentioned whereby an unprotected document can be linked to via INCLUDETEXT, however this isn't a simple solution for me as I intend to call the document via 'eScribe' functionality in Mosaiq software which would require complicate things considerably

The only other solution I can think of is to dynamically protect/unprotect the document with a single/double click event.
