View Full Version : [SOLVED:] Is there a way to place our custom template in the featured category (File -> New)

I have been trying to place my custom template in the featured category of File -> New section.
Tried placing the template file in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Templates\1033" location. I could see the thumbnail of my template in plain portrait format but my original template is in Landscape. Also, rest of the templates have their title page as thumbnail preview whereas my template's title page is not reflecting in thumbnail.
Attached screenshot for reference.
Can someone please help in providing solution for making my template look like rest of the templates.

1. In PP options, I have a Personal Templates location set

2. I saved a POTX (must be a Template file) to that location
3. PP File, New, Custom shows the thumbnail

I would have said it wasn't possible to get your own templates in the Featured section! Since you have it there (let me know how) maybe you can make it display correctly by reopening in PPT.
File > Info
Properties on the right click > Advanced Properties
Make sure Show Preview Picture is ticked and resave.

I just did the steps in post #2
I believe that if you do not have a personal templates folder set, the [Custom] link to the right of [Featured] does not show
The original example (Test.POTX) didn't have any graphic or Slide 1 text just a color background, so I added some text to Slide 1.
A thumb nail seems to show without any Show Preview Picture

Paul & John... Thanks a ton for your suggestions.
The issue got resolved by activating Show Preview Picture option on the Property tab. Initially there was no change in thumb nail preview but once I restarted PowerPoint it worked. Thanks again!
To answer John's question, for displaying my template in featured section I have placed my .POTX file in 2 locations (listed below) and I could see the preview in both Featured and Custom sections.
1. C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Templates\1033
2. C:\Users\user\Documents\Custom Office Templates

I'm using Win10 and Office 2016 (or 360) and I can't find the Show Preview Picture option on the Property, either on Right-Click file properties or the Info tab within PP
I get a thumbnail of the first slide in PP under File, New

Save Preview should be in File > Info > Properties > Advanced properties. It is usually ON by default

Thanks, but seems like it's different in Office 365
Advanced properties doesn't have the check box, and a right-click on the file, doesn't have a summary tab

FWIW, the thumbnail does show in File Explorer, View Large Icons
Maybe it's not uncheck-able in 365 ????

Strange - it is there in 365 too but this is on Windows 7. I was pretty sure it's on 10 but I don't have a 10 PC handy. Did you definitely pull down the Advanced Properties window with the little arrow next to properties?

No, I did not - didn't even see that teeny, tiny, itsby, bitsy triangle
Since the properties option below is labeled "Show All Properties", I took MS at their word that there wasn't any thing else and didn't look elsewhere

Thanks for explaining
