Solved: Peculiar line problem

The attached file contains an image copied from a scanned pdf file. In Word 2000, there is a line appearing on the right border of the copied area, which prints out in the document. Opening the file at home on 2003, the line does not appear. Any thoughts on how to avoid this? I can delete it by pasting into Paint and modifying the image, but I lose quality when I repaste it.

Hi MD,
I fixed the line by right clicking on the picture and editing it. I moved the righ border over to left till it disappeared. This is a bandaid, but may work for you until someone can come up with the answer. :)

I don't know if Paint is the best program to use for this; I used Photoshop. Here's what I did:

Zoom in on the sig in the PDF file to around 400% or more.
Copy the screen and paste it into Photoshop or something.
Crop it.
Save the file as .jpg (highest quality)
When I pasted this into word and resized it to the original signature, the quality looks roughly the same.

Note: If you have hanging letters like g, j, p, q, and y in your signature, make the graphic "floating" and put it behind your text.

I'm more puzzled where the line comes from. As you can see, there is nothing in the pdf, and I've tried this on different computers, but same programmes.

I really can't think of why that line would appear unless the original scan was toward the edge of the page and that line is actually part of the edge. When you paste a graphic into Acrobat Writer, it might not show it visibly but still print it how it was scanned.

If that's not the case, I really don't know where the line is coming from.

The line is a bizarre effect of Word's compression of the original - it's not there if you restore it to the original size and, on my machine it appears when you compress below 86%. Word 2003 is obviously improved in this area over Word 2000.

If you edit / compress the original in PhotoShop (or your favourite picture editor) you shouldn't get the problem - perhaps if you just crop the original slightly differently Word 2000's compression algorithms will cope better - or do as Tommy suggests and just crop the line off.
