View Full Version : Excel Macro suddenly starts giving incorrect ActiveCell Data

I've had a macro running for over 3 years, but now it has suddenly started returning the incorrect column Number, even when the cursor is firmly in Column 1.

It keeps selecting column Y. EVERY TIME !
It doesn't matter what I select as the ActiveCell.
Any ideas what could be causing this ?
If a virus is a possibility, any suggestions as to where I should start looking.

Here's the code bit that I'm using which is causing the problem.

I added the MsgBox ActiveCell.Column at the end so that I could see what column it was selecting.

That code doesn't select anything, and is clearly not a virus.
If you had to add the line at the end to see the column number, then it must be 1 or the If block prior to that would have displayed its message.

Code works for me. Column Y is not selected so is there more code you have not provided?

I did NOT include all of the code, but I have now added the selection part

and is that now all of the code? The line you added would only make a difference if you already had multiple cells selected - it would then select just the active one of those.

You are correct.
The code is to make sure that the user selected a cell in Column A.
When I open the Macro and step through the code by using F8, everything works as intended.
I have deleted and re-created a different button to run the code, but that still give the same error.
I've never encountered something like this before.
I have exported the same Macro to a new sheet.
It works the very first time, but after that, it's the same error.

I've been asked to provide more of the full Macro rather than just the offending portion.
Here's more or less the full bit to get an idea of what it does.


After trying all of the suggestions, I'm noticing another issue.
Now, if I've selected a cell, the next time the Macro runs, it will select the previous cell as the activecell even if I've selected a different cell.
This was NOT an issue before.

Not sure, but it seems that you're always making ActiveCell column A in whatever the activeRow is

Now I'm sure that the code itself is NOT the problem.


There's something going on with the Worksheet itself that I can't isolate.
I've come to this conclusion because if I create a blank sheet and run all of the different versions of the code that has been suggested, as well as my original code, the new sheet performs as expected.
No Errors, No Problems.
However, when I run all of the code that we've put forward, a problem arises.
Either the ActiveCell returned is NOT the one that was selected, or it randomly makes the ActiveCell the last ActiveCell that was used.

Even when I copy the sheet to a new workbook, the problems arise.
If I run the macro or step through it using F8, everything works as intended, so there's something going on with the click of the Button that's causing the problem.
M question is: How do you investigate random behavior on a worksheet, probably caused by clicking the Button.

Since we are unable to look over your shoulder as you work on your spreadsheet it is difficult to say exactly what. Are you able to create a mock up of your current workbook and post it?

12 worksheets in the workbook but I'll isolate and test with only those that are called by the macro.

Make sure that there are no events that are getting in the way

Make sure that the sheet is not protected, since that might prevent ActiveCell from getting updated

I added some Debug.Print statements to the attachment and it seems to work as I think you wanted

Delete WS Gunsmoke, save WB as new name, and recreate Gunsmoke and see if that works

Hi Guys:


This is the Problem worksheet that I'm having a problem with.
Its a .xls workbook

First, we go to the worksheet Gunsmoke.
On This sheet, we must select a Lot # from column A that has NOT been previously selected. ( The Background is NOT YELLOW )
Then, we're supposed to click on the 90% Invoice Button.
It's supposed to post data to the Parts&Labor sheet using the ActiveCell, however, it keeps giving me a cell which is NOT the cell that I selected.

I included a MsgBox only to show which cell is actually being recorded as the ActiveCell.
It's NOT the one that was selected.
I'm trying to find out what is causing this behavior.

Same issue opening file (with Excel 2010) so tried another computer (Excel 2021) - opens ok, except for notice about updating links.

Went to Gunsmoke sheet.
Clicked 90% button.
Code works correctly no matter what cell is selected.
Never goes to column Y. Stays where I started.

It is not necessary to Unlock cells for code to write data into them. Just Unprotect sheet.

Had to use Task Manager to close file because of your code - got error "can't find project or library".

I would use Access for this.

There has to be something going on here because I sent the same exact file to other people and they ran the file the first time, NO PROBLEMS, then, when it was run the next time, it created the same problem that I was having.
It would either go to column Y, or it would keep going to the last cell that was previously selected.

I'll find a work around, but I'll really like to find out what's going on.

What do you mean by "next time" - next time file is opened?

I ran procedure multiple times (even closed and reopened) and never encountered issue.

Can't replicate so can't offer a fix.

I'm at a loss as to how some people have no problems running the file, while others have.

My workaround is to re-structure the code using an onclick event from column A.

Crude but workable.

Give the attached a try, I have tidied up some of the code, mainly removed the use of Activate and Select being used together on the same sheet. You would do better to write code in the future that does not use Select at all and qualify all of your ranges and worksheets.

I haven't the time to rewrite all of your code to qualify everything but if you Google what qualify a range/ worksheet means you should understand.

When I used your code with the file provided, everything worked as intended, however, when I copied your code into the actual program, the original problem resurfaced.
That suggests that there's some malicious code hidden in the actual workbook that is only affecting this specific worksheet, because all of the other sheets are unaffected.
And as I had previously stated. When I step through the code, it executes correctly.

I have rewritten the code; changed the Button & sheetName, and put everything into a new WorkBook.
The problem seems to have gone away. Hopefully for good.

When I used your file, I saved it as a '.xlsm' file, when I was done editing the code I saved it back to a ''.xls' file. Maybe if you were to do the same it may change something in the file. I am only clutching at straws here as I can't see what the problem could be.
