Hi,
I have 3 columns, each with a header row label. I want to split that header cell into two rows and then merge the cells in the top row to form one cell. It is just a matter of having a subset of labels under the main label. But I'm lost. I thought this would be so common that I would find the process identifed in the pull down menus or, for sure, in Excel help. I must not know the right terms to use to find the instructions. Can someone help? Thank you.

I think you will just want to start with two rows for your header. Then you can merge the cells across rows and / or columns as needed.

Hi Trudy,
Not sure I fully understand.

You have a row at the top with headers
you wish to split each cell in the header row vertically
then you wish to merge and center the top row into one cell?

If thats what your looking for you can select the entire row below the header row and right click and click on insert. That will add an entire row.
(alternative is to select each cell in header rowand split them one at a time)

then just select the cells you want in the header row and click the "merge and center" button in excel.
