I was trying to go to the VBE with ALT + F11, but accidentally pressed CTRL + F11 and Excel added a sheet called "Macro1" with wider than usual columns. Does anyone know what this is about?

Yes, it is an old Excel 4 Macro sheet. Same as if you do a right-click on the tab, select Insert, and choose MS Excel 4.0 Macro.

I am aware of a n umber of spreadsheets that still have these left over from Excel 4 days, and I do believe that some bright sparks do use them for some very complex, convoluted solutions.

Ah! So that's what that is. Does it do anything useful?

As I said, it can be used to get some quite devious solutions that are otherwise not possible in Excel. The most obvious is reading a cell from a closed workbook, which has been featured in VBAX a few times recently.

Oops! Sorry! For some reason only posts 1 through 3 showed up when I replied. Another of life's mysteries....

Microsoft has a help file for Excel 2000 detailing the Excel 4 macro's:
