Ever since I went to www.bacardimojito.com , I've been making them at home, and they're the most awesome drink ever! Well worth a try at least!

Joseph,
Going to try one this weekend.
Any particular recommendation? Ourtastes tend to be towards the drier, more alcoholoc, rather than the sweeter, more exotic.
malik641
09-14-2006, 03:16 PM
If you want the more alcoholic taste, just add less lime juice (or use 1/4 of a lime)....the biggest factor that takes away the alcohol taste is the lime juice. If you find it too dry and want it to be sweeter, then add some lime juice, NOT more sugar.
There's a variety of ways to make it. I like the Original Bicardi Mojito:
-1/2 Lime
-12 mint leaves
-1/2 part sugar (not sure
-1 part Bacardi Superior
-3 parts Club soda / sprite / ginger ale
Some people use Bacardi Limon...I'm going to try that next.
Check out the bacardimojito.com (http://www.bacardimojito.com/default.aspx) website (under recipes in the top right corner) if you're going to make it yourself. If you're going to order one, I'm sure if you tell the bartender you wanted more of a drier taste he/she will know what to do. Be careful, I've found that although it's a popular drink and everything, it's not at every bar (at least in FL). Best bet is to go to a cuban place, IMO.
Hope you enjoy it! :)

Thanks Joseph, but there aren't too many cuban places here in sleepy Dorset :)

No problem :thumb
Your best bet (probably) is to make it yourself...it may take a few tries (like me) to get it the way you want it....the hardest part is making sure you have enough lime juice from the muddling :yes
Have fun and let me know!

Unless things have changed since last time I was in England, the British don't really know how to make cocktails other than a simple hi-ball. Mixing more than one type of liquor together seemed like a revoluntiary idea even time I asked a bartender. LOL!
'Course that was 15 years ago...

And that's a Canadian speaking
Unlike our North American cousins, we English understand the simplicity of a basic good design, our ales our simple but subtle, we don't go in for the over-indulgent flavours, or over-spiced tastes of your boutique breweries.
I must admit that one of the things I generally dislike about cocktails is the prepondearnce of such that have 57 different flavours, totally unnecessary. What are the best cocktails, the simple ones of coures. A Whisky sour, Margharita, Gin sling, and of course the best of all, a Martini, which we invented.
BTW,a s you may have noticed, we don't say British. I am English at worst, Wessex at best, never British). The only time we ever say British is when we are referring to a Scotsman who did something good (hard-pressed to think of one), someone who apsires to being English but never can be.

Nope, haven't tried them, Joseph. I tend to drink more wine and scotch than anything else.
I actually have a friend coming round on Saturday, and we'll be consuming a few Caesars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesar_%28cocktail%29). Just a word of caution if you decide to go that route... they are ALWAYS better mixed by someone else. I don't know why, but they are. My wife makes the very best, garnished with a pickled bean. :thumb

No offense Ken, but that drink sounds disgusting.
Tomato sauce? A blend of clam broth? Tabasco sauce?! CELERY?!??!?
All that with vodka?
yuk.
LOL, I do mean that...but I'm not trying to put your drink down.....I guess I should give it a try before I knock on it, huh?
Maybe your wife could give me her recipe...then I'll start thinking about trying that :)
Ken Puls
09-27-2006, 03:08 PM
LOL!
The ingredients are the same, Joseph. She uses Mott's Clamato (http://www.mottsclamato.com/) as the base.
Caesars are funny things though. When I say it's better when someone else makes it, I mean it. You could measure it out so that two people used the exact same ingredients in the same proportions. You mix one, and someone else mixes the other. The one you did not make always tastes better. I wouldn't have believed that myself, but honestly, it's true.
And for the record, they're pretty good. Whoever came up with the idea, though... I'll never get that. You're quite right that it sounds disgusting. :)

No I didn't as Lynne decided to go away for the weekend, and left me on my own. No fun drinking cocktails alone. I am away this weekend, so the one after at the earliest.

You are old enough to drink in public are you? And if you do get us over there, be prepared for some serious drinking, we down them.
But seriously, please let me know :)
I will try them, but having looked they seem a bit fussy for my taste. I run to simple drinks, I like beer best (real beer, not that p*#s-water you guys drink :)), malt whisky second, wine third, then cocktails. For cocktails, I keep it simple, martini, whisky sour, Gin Sling, etc.
But I will let you know when I have tried it.

No wait a minute here, Limey... who are you calling a Yank? :bat2:
Re the Motts, it's the only way I'll get a Caesar. My wife does not do clams, so unless it's a premix, I'm SOL.
My personal tastes go for wine first, malt whisky second (preferably one that tastes like a "peat bog on fire"), beer third (not that p*#s-water my southern neighbours drink, although Bob will still say I drink mine too cold, ) then cocktails.

With you on the malts though. My favourite is Lagavulin, followed by Talisker. Yours? With water? I also wonder what Malcolm's taste extends to.

Ken's right Joseph. If you want to drink throw away the ice, don't spoil the alcohol. But Ken, add bottled water to the malt, preferably from the same region as the malt, it is my one exception.

.......
I don't drink beer, ever. I hate that stuff. My friends tell me it's an "aquired taste"....but it's just not for me. Why would you drink something that tastes like it came outta the jersey shore?
My order of likes: Mixed drinks (cocktails), malt beverages, Shots, and wine.
Some of my friends tell me that I "drink girly drinks". You know what I tell them? I say "If men can wear pink shirts, then I can damn well drink a cocktail." :giggle
That sure shut them up (some of them DO wear pink shirts...at times). LOL
My personal favourite Scotch recipe is 2 oz of Lagavulin in a glass. Period. :) (Joseph, try that and get back to us.) I don't even know what that is. I'll give it a shot first, then I'll get back to ya :)
Ken's right Joseph. If you want to drink throw away the ice, don't spoil the alcohol. If it's served very cold, I have no problem throwing away the ice. The problem for me is that the only things that are usually kept cool are the lime , mint, and the club soda / sprite (and none of those at bars....well, except for the mint). Besides, I like to chew ice...don't ask.
A mixed drink for me is vodka or gin mixed with ice.....not much ice.
That's a little rough for me...but I'd rather drink that than straight tequila.....::barf::

come visit me in rochester. I'll serve you beer. or whiskey (with or without coke). But you won't get beer made here (if you ever see "Genesee" beer for sale.. run!), it'll either be canadian or pennsyltuckian

Just looked in my cupboard Ken, and although I have two bottles of Calvados, three of Armagnac, I am down to my last half-dozen whisky. Time to take a trip up to the smoke and visit Milroy's whisky emporium in Soho.
I was thinking about bringing a double distilled Special Edition Lagavulin over next March, but seeing as you already drink the big L, I tghink I will look out for something else. And I won't forget the water, you bring the glasses. I know at least one other who will join us. BTW, what do you pay for a 16 yearold Lagavuin over there?

It looks like the going price is about $95, according to the BC Liquor Distribution Branch (http://www.bcliquorstores.com/en/products/207126). What's weird, though, is that they're listing the 700ml bottle of 12 year at $113 and change...
Bob Phillips
10-14-2006, 08:30 AM
That's probably due to strength Ken.
I just looked it up, 12 year old is ?48.19, 16 year old is ?39.99, but the 12 year old is 57.8% against 43% for the 16 year old. 57.8% - phew!
So we are a bit cheaper than you, but it is marginal, probably only due to the strength of the ?.
What brands have you tried, and liked/disliked (don't even bother mentioning Glenfiddich)?
BTW, I will need to try it before coming over, don't want a duffer :yes

Well, the list I've tried isn't long, and I'm not sure I'll remember all the details... but here's a go at it.
-Bowmore. The first scotch I ever tried. It got me coming back for more. I actually got a bottle of Bowmore cask strength which is quite peaty as well. Quite enjoyed them both.
-Cragganmore. Tasted to me like they just washed out a cask and bottled it. Not a big fan of this one.
-Glenmorangie, Port and Sherry casked version. This is what my dad buys. They're okay, but nothing that I'd buy on my own.
-Dahlwhinnie. See Cragganmore.
-Talisker. I only had this once, at Christmas a couple of years ago. I can't really comment on it though, as I'd already had... um... a few glasses of a different one by then. I *think* I liked it...
-Lagavulin 12 year and 16 year. These are my two favourites. Honestly, I actually think I prefer the 12 to the 16, which is why I was a little shocked by the price of the 12. The 12 has a much more potent peat & smoke to it. My wife says it smells like antiseptic, and my father says it tastes like a peat bog on fire. :)
My personal tastes seem to run to peat & smoke. I hear that the other one I really need to try is Laphroig, but so far I haven't got there. If all goes well, I'll managed to convince my wife that the liquor cabinet is short a bottle by Christmas. :yes

We just had a birthday party for my girlfriend's Mom, and I was "bartending"....it's funny cause all I made was mojitos (that's all they asked me for!). I still say you gotta try one of mine, and give it another chance, lol
I recently had a "Mango Mojito", and man that was good! That was the craze at my girlfriend's Mom's party. All you have to do for that is use Captain Morgan's Mango Puerto Rican rum instead of Bicardi Superior.

I was in Palma last week and I finally got to trying a Mojito ... it was horrible! To be fair, it was probably what was added to it (It was Cappuccino's at Palau March, http://www.grupocappuccino.com/, lovely location, and althought they have a cocktail menu it wasn't great, there was only one Mojito on the menu, Mojito de Palo), but as Zack said, too sweet for my taste.
malik641
10-23-2007, 08:02 AM
Well thanks for at least trying it out, Bob. I know people have their own tastes, and I'm sorry that was a bad one for you. I really hope that wasn't a Cuban restaurant (though I doubt it) because those guys are the originators (supposedly, I never did any research on that).
If you ever go near a restaurant called "El Mariachi" (which I doubt there's a location near you) they make them really good. And so does the Cheesecake Factory. But if you don't like sweet, then I wouldn't advise trying it again.
I really like the mojito...but I guess it's because I'm young....I don't know.
Bob Phillips
10-23-2007, 08:52 AM
No it wasn't a Cuban restaurant, it was a Spanish coffe bar in reality, I think they just have a cocktail menu for the younger set. But As I said, the place was lovely, 20 feet away from a statue by Joan Miro, Egg, and the fact that I didn't like the drink did not spoil by enjoyment of the day - it was sunny, with Lynne and friends, not a care in the world.
Is Mariachi's a chain? Do they extend all over the country (I am in New Jersey a week Monday)? If so, I will try another, so I will then at least know whether I don't like them or not.
malik641
10-23-2007, 12:31 PM
That sounds so nice. I can't wait to travel outside the USA. :)
So you're going to be in New Jersey, huh? Whereabouts? Too bad I'm not there anymore. A possibility to meet you would be nice.
You should visit Florida sometime . New Jersey's too depressing.
I thought El Mariachi was a chain...but apparently they only have 3-4 restaurants in Florida (there are others with that name in other states, but it's not the same). Your best bet is to go to The Cheesecake Factory (http://www.thecheesecakefactory.com/). They make excellent mojitos. (The Flying Gorilla is good too...but that's more like a milk shake). They make excellent food, too. If you go, you should really try the "Chicken and Bisquits". It's a large plate...but OH MY GOD is it GOOD!!!!! I never order anything else because I'm afraid it won't be as good as that.
Anyway, good luck with your trip to New Jersey. I hope you enjoy it!

Joseph,
I had forgotten that you were a New Jersey boy (glad to see you are using the New <vbg>). I will be in Summit, NJ, 10 miles or so NW of Newark. I agree, it is always nice to meet virtual friends in real life. I met Zack two years ago, Ken last year, it was really good, looking forward to seeing them again.
I have been to Florida, 3 times, back in the 90s. It was taking the kids to theme-park-land, but I always thought that there was a lot more too it, maybe too hot for me though.
I looked up Mariachi's, and as you say there are many variations of the name, but they seem to be one-offs. I also looked up The Cheesecake Factory, and apart from the fact that the nearest one to where I will be is Trenton (although that may be okay as I will probably have a car), and none in NYC where I will go for one day, I thought they messed about with the cocktails too much (a margharita with cointreau, pomegranate and grapefruit juice?), but I will try it if I can. Is the food any good there?
ANd one thing is for sure, I will enjoy it, I always do :-).

I have been to Florida, 3 times, back in the 90s. It was taking the kids to theme-park-land, but I always thought that there was a lot more too it, maybe too hot for me though. I gotta tell ya, living in New Jersey for the first 20 years of my life, the heat where I am (close to Miami) is better than the heat+humidity in NJ. It does get hot down here, but we have the ocean breeze and that helps a lot.

I could be wrong, but have a look. And I highly recommend the food there. All my CheeseCake Factory experiences have never dissappointed me (I hope I don't jynx it!). The food is outstanding. The price is higher than your typical Friday's or AppleBee's, but you get more food and the quality is excellent. And I've been to that particular location myself and be sure to book it in advanced just to be safe. That place gets PACKED on the weekends. Like a 2 hour wait sometimes. Yes, it's that popular.

The Cheesecake Factory locations I've been to here in Phoenix and the one in Las Vegas at Ceasar's Palace have been nothing short of incredible. The food is great, but make sure to save room for a slice of cheesecake too.

They even have a Cheesecake Factory in KC. Been 2-3 times, food was excellent.

Do the powers that be at KC Masterpiece restaurant know of your betrayal?
Just kidding Rich. Kansas City is a wonderful place to eat. So many good places to try out.

With over 100 Barbecue places in the greater KC metro, it's tough to limit myself to one place. But we certainly did well at KC Masterpiece! :)

Phew! i have just read through all these posts nice to know i'm not the only alcoholic!, reading the ramblings of everyones favourite embibement made me feel quite humble as aside from Stella (a wonderful lager but only if brewed by Interbrew in this country as the real stuff is far too malty!)....i have no idea why they call it "Wife beater", i love the very simple, classic G & T......Very tall glass packed full of ice slice of lemon, slice of lime, a little squeeze of each follwed by at least 50ml of Bombay Saphire Gin topped to the brim with Schweppes slimline tonic with zest of lemon, now THAT my friends is a drink......ooooh! practically salivating at the mere thought!
I cant say i have tried many whiskies, if i ever had they have been like drinking lit petrol (gas to our cousins across the pond!), i have to say i have had one or two brandies that have been really smooth, gorgeous flavour....the kind that makes you have that warm glow without ripping your throat out but then again i didn't buy these as they were bought for me in a bid to either impress ("hey look at the cash that i can spend!") or convert ("...honestly you really should be more descerning with your choice of liquer"), so for now i will stay firmly planted in my two drink rule.....Beer to be sociable and get drunk over a longer period of time...Gin to enjoy and relax when in good company!
What the hell am i waffling about? it's all about getting drunk!!!!!
As for cocktails i'm with Bob, less is more, as i see it if you are prone to adding more ingredients that you can recite after drinking them then you must be a wuss and not be of real drinking age, only wanting to mask the great flavour of the alcohol as you pour it down your girly neck in a bid to impress!....ooops a little to much of the Wife Beater i think...hehe!

One of my favourite cocktails has to be the Black Russian. I think is is Kahula or Tia maria, then vodka and Coke (or Pepsi ;))
that or something I crazily made one time, jack daniels, southern comfort, and ginger beer.
I think I will try the Mojitos at xmas :D

Seeing this latest response to this thread made me re-read it all over again. These were good days, seems that the forum was more light-hearted in those days. And so many of those good guys don't post here any longer, Simon was last here in 2018, Brandtrock in 2012, Joseph in 2008, Matt in 2008, Zack in 2017,Ken in 2020. I have had the pleasure of at meeting some of those guys, Simon in the UK, and Zack and Ken in the States (I also met Ken in Bulgaria a couple of years back!), and we have shared a couple of delicious whiskies, but as I said, it is different now. We have some really good guys who have joined the fold, Paul, SamT and Ted (AussieBear), but I seem to be the last of the old-timers. Perhaps time for me to move on and just enjoy the whiskeys (and the brandies and the and the cognacs, and the wines, and the beers, and the G&Ts, and the gin martinis, but definitely not one of those horrible sounding Caesars, or those overly-sweet mojitos).

Your passport to "move on" seemed to be in the next in line to be looked at..... but unfortunately due to an accident this morning, well the pile fell on the floor and after picking them it seems to be well down the list. Sorry Bob but rules are rules, and you cant go until it gets processed. Better grab yourself another whisky, this could take a while.
