Solved: Import Specification file

Dear Friends,

does anyone know where does the specification file is usually being saved when importing ascii data in an access table.

Get External Data > Import > Advanced > Save As ... (where?)

When presented with the dialog box to save, why don't you navigate upwards to find out?

Because, it doesn't give me this option.

The little folder icon with an arrow pointing up? It shows fine for me.

To me only a small window comes up that asks me to type the name of the specification import/export file to save.
I also searched with this name and nothing came up.
What is the path that comes to your application?

Hi banavas,

On my Access 2000, the Import Specs are held in two System Tables - MSysIMEXSpecs and MSysIMEXColumns. I don't know the format but you can work most of it out by browsing the tables.

On my A97, File - get ext data - import - text files (from the list down the bottom) play with the import specs for about 5 or 6 screens then in the final screen (when next is disabled) the is a new option ADVANCED, click this and this is where you save

Are you sure the Advanced... option isn't on ALL the screens in the Wizard, not just the last one? Of course, there's no point in saving until you've filled in all the details, but you should be able to load existing specs.

I just tested with Access XP and yes it is on all screens. did a test before at work (A97) and thought it was only on the last screen, but yes, you should wait till the end until you hit it.

I really feel strange. On access XP the advanced option is on all screens, however no hint is given about where the specification file is saved.

No its not at all. Not sure where it lives {i assume in the hidden tables}, but in any case, once you give it a name {for example MySpec } you can use it thus wise

DoCmd.TransferText acExportDelim, "mySpec", "tblMyTable", "c:\myFile.txt", -1

for example.
