Adding text to incoming emails

Hi all, I don't code VBA (yet) and was hoping someone could tell me if some thing was possible and then point me in the right direction. I work at a small company and we have our own internal project tracking numbers. We do a lot of work for a large client who has their own project tracking numbers. Their emails contain their project numbers in subject line. Is it to have a script and rule combination (or any other solution) that would query incoming email and add our project number to the subject line along side our clients? I assume some script would query a database we set up with the matched project numbers and then add them? Are their simpler ways to achieve this automation? I'm not looking for a full blown solutions, just a sense of what is possible and how to work toward it.
