2 drop down menus or data val? or a combination!

ok, here goes with my first "challenge"

trying to automate a piece of our estimating function. I have several categories of items to be counted and a qty value for each item. Example 124' of 4" pipe, 35 each 4" valves, 167 pieces of W12*40 beams 20' each..

each item has a square foot factor. When we estimate, each type of material we work on has different productivity factors and ultimately labor/equipment costs....I need my categories to line up with eventual pricing factors already built...

I saw another thread on data validation and got me really clicking.

here would be a sample of the categories:

    Category Item SqFt Factor

    Fab Pipe
    Bulk Pipe
    Fab Structural
    Bulk Structural
    Yada Yada
    Yada Nada

Each category has dozens (more like Hundreds) of potential items and corresponding sqft factors...I want a non visible box, like the data val box where I select category, then in same row, different column, another box where I can select the specific item from that category. I figure I can do a lookup or match for the qty, unless there is a better way.

each time we do this, may be 3 rows (or 3 items) or 67 rows..

heres an old version of the doc, Im trying to upgrade..uses simple lookups,

any help or better ideas is appreciated!!!
