AutoFilter Problem

I'm using Excel 2000 and have a problem that just surfaced with AutoFilter.

I have a list of data, all conforming to AutoFilter requirements (continuous, etc.). An AutoFilter is applied to the column headers, but all of a sudden the drop down arrows that normally appear with AutoFilter on are gone.

Meanwhile, if I go to Data > Filter, AutoFilter is selected. Macros can still apply the filters, I just can't see the drop down arrows.

Any ideas?? Is there a parameter that sets visibility of the drop downs to false? I'm baffled...

Have you got some code that deletes shapes, that can delete autofilter arrows as well.
