What can be done to "clean" the palette (such as remove cell headers)

What are the options to make the final product look as polished as possible, WITHOUT affecting the user's general settings.

For example, removing the cell headers (1-X, A-X) looks to be specific the file, which is OK.

Can I remove the tabs as well?

What problems can exist with various versions (2000+)?

I am aware that for 2007+ you can remove the ribbon, BUT this stays part of the settings. Sure, you can set it back on close, but if the program crashes, the user could get really confused. I don't want to take any chances with messing up the user's settings.

There are so many questions here, all with different answers, you need to be specific.
