I have a laptop hard disk that has crashed. Does anyone know of a place that they can recommend to recover the information on the disk?

I recently had a hard disk crash on my laptop. I am fairly good about backups and did not loose too much of value. IBM honored their warranty and replaced the hard drive. They want the original HD back, but I am reluctant to do that because of data security concerns. Which gets me to my point.

I would be a bit careful about handing a HD to anyone IF that HD had sensitive data on it. I would like to assume that most companies that do HD recovery are honest and helpful, friendlly curtious, kind, ... But who knows. Tread carefully and only go with a company you can trust (which is probably the reason you are asking for experience).

I will be interested to hear what others have to say on this topic.

Best bet is a well-known recovery outfit such as www.ontrack.com.

However, if the laptop/drive is still under warranty, you MUST first verify which recovery services you may use so as not to void your warranty. For example, HP required that I use only OnTrack.

DRive manufacturers usually have a list of approved recovery services at their web sites. I suspect that laptop manufacturers have such a list as well.

Such recovey services usually charge an evaluation fee. Sometines the evaluation fee can be applied to the total cost, sometines not,

I would be surprised is such a franchise operation would be on the list of approved data recovery services for use under warranty.

I would not use any data recovery service not recommended by the drive manufacturers, however, it seems that drive manufacturers are now more lenient as to which service may be used, e.g.:

I just noticed that SEagate itself is in the data recovery business and offers a free evaluation. http://www.seagate.com/support/service/drs/

It seems that Maxtor no longer recommends data recovery services

It seems that Hitachi no longer recommends daya recovery services. http://www.hitachigst.com/warranty/jsp/arma24h.jsp

But do check with the laptop/drive manufacturer to verify their requirements.

Vantagetech is actually local to me, and I likely would have used them if HP had not insisted I use OnTrack.
