    Numbering not incrementing

I have a word doc that I applied multilevel numbering to using list styles as described by Shauna Kelly here, but the different headings are always restarting at 1. So H2 starts at 1, H3 becomes 1.1, next H2 restarts at 1, H3 at 1.1, next H3 at 1.2 and so on.

Any idea what I am doing wrong here?

i suffered heading problems a lot.

below is not a solution to heading problem but it's the way to overcome heading headaches for me.

i use the code in post #21 of
    http://www.vbaexpress.com/forum/show...e-styles/page2

I insert (H1), (H2), etc in front of the lines which will be converted into headings.
when i am completely done with the document, run that macro.

i had opened the thread for a specific need but now i use it regularly.
thanks again to macropod and snb.
