Copy text from start of numbered list without the number

When I copy text from the beginning of a numbered paragraph (either a numbered list or a heading), Word includes the list number or heading number in the clipboard, which is never what I want. Is there a way to get only the text?

Don't include the paragraph mark in the selected (copied) range.

As long as the copied text includes the first character it will include the paragraph number. Actually you are right in that if I paste everything including formatting it excludes the number, but if I paste text only, for example into a text editor, it includes the number, which seems backward.
