Maximum number of characters in cell

Is there a limitation of the number of characters an excel-cell can hold?
I have a large cell formatted with "text" and "word wrap" and want to use it for input of longer texts.
When I write more than 255 characters the cell shows "#########".
Is there a way to change that?

What version of excel are you using? I know that (at least) Excel 97 through Excel 2000 can hold 32,000 characters in a cell - funny, cause I just read that today at work - but some formulas will not handle cells that contain more than 255 characters of text.

I'm using Office XP. I've found an article on MSDN about the limitations of Excel 2000. There it's been said that the maximum number of chars in a cell is about 32000 and 1024 of them can be displayed in the cell.

But with "my" excel I get that "#######" after 255 chars.

That is because it cannot all be displayed in lieu of the column width.
