Description:

Turn Data in the form of Worst / Bad / Base Case / Good / Better / Best into 'stacked' Tornado Chart (aka Tornado Diagram)

Discussion:

Very good way to display multiple sensitivities for project or forecast results. Zip file includes add-in and sample data file - sample file has more variation than (commonly) encountered in real life. Add-in will allow for four increments of "good" and "bad" outcomes above and below base case

Code:

instructions for use

See Zip file. The add-in includes two worksheets (hidden when loaded As an add-in) that are required For the code To function. All code Is visible In the Add-In.

How to use:

  1. Unzip the file
  2. Copy the "Tornado v1.4.xla" to the location where you store Add-Ins on your computer (typically C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Library)
  3. Copy the "Test with Notes.xls" file to your XL Data directory
  4. Start Excel, and click on Tools | Add-Ins
  5. If "Tornado v1.4" is listed, click on the radio button beside it, otherwise, click on "Browse" and browse to the location you stored the file
  6. The Add-In will add a new menu to yoiur "Tools" toolbar called "Tornado Chart"
  7. When you have data arranged as required for a Tornado Chart click on that new menu item to create the chart
  8. When you "uninstall" the add-in, this new menu item will be deleted

Test the code:

  1. Open "Test with Notes.xls"
  2. Review the data layout, and see where different values are held
  3. Click on "Tornado Chart" on your "Tools" menu - this will bring up a new "Tornado Tools" toolbar
  4. With the cursor in the data range for your Tornado Chart, click on "Create Tornado"
  5. Test the options in the toolbar to change the appearance of the Tornado Chart
