View Full Version : General Purpose Encryption Tools

I have been using encryption techniques on individual files and folders for many years for all the obvious security reasons. For example, I encrypt sensitive folders and files on my laptop just in case it should ever be stolen. I have typically used techniques built into PowerDesk (a nice file manager program I have used for a long time). I have never had a problem with this technique and never "lost" a file because I could not remember the password or the s/w did not work. But I am always poking around looking for better ways to do things (I know, none of you do that, but humour me).

I recently came across a free encryption program called Cryptainer LE that approaches the need a bit differently, i.e., you initially create a "vault" (lettered drive) that is invisible except through the cryptainer software and your password. It looks and acts (via the Cryptainer tool) like any other drive; you can drop items in and drag items out. It looks pretty bulletproof and is quite easy to use. Not having to enter passwords for each file or folder is appealing, particularly for those files that I use frequently. There are also some nice features like encrypted email attachments that are "self decrypting" (like self extracting Zip files) by the recipient as long as they know the specific password.

Questions:
1) what do others use for general purpose encryption?
2) any experience with Cryptainer?

NOTE: Cryptainer LE is the free version of the "bigger and better" Cryptainer
